Jacksonville’s historic Springfield neighborhood is known for its character, community spirit and beautifully preserved architecture. At Othello, those qualities come together in a restaurant that feels both deeply personal and effortlessly sophisticated.
Located at the corner of Pearl and Sixth streets, Othello offers a Mediterranean-inspired dining experience shaped by the culinary traditions of Southern Spain and the Middle East. Yet the restaurant is about far more than geography or individual dishes. Its defining qualities are warmth, generosity and the belief that memorable meals are meant to be shared.
From its softly lit dining room to its thoughtfully prepared food, Othello creates the kind of atmosphere that encourages guests to slow down, order several plates and linger around the table.
A Restaurant Rooted in Family and Tradition
Othello is the creation of father-and-daughter team Jeriees “Jerry” Ewais and Vanesa Ewais, whose backgrounds bring an appealing combination of restaurant experience, design sensibility and personal history to the concept.
Jerry operated Zodiac Bar & Grill in Downtown Jacksonville for more than two decades. His approach to hospitality was shaped in part by his childhood in Jordan, where sharing food was an important expression of family, tradition and welcome. Vanesa, a Jacksonville native, later gained experience working in prominent New York restaurants before returning home to help create Othello with her father.
That family partnership gives the restaurant an authenticity that cannot be manufactured. Othello feels polished, but never impersonal. It is stylish enough for a celebratory evening, yet comfortable enough to become a neighborhood favorite.
The restaurant describes its mission as creating shared moments where people from different cultures and backgrounds can connect over a meal. Kindness, generosity and curiosity are central to its vision of hospitality.
Guests experience that philosophy not as a slogan, but through the atmosphere, service and communal nature of the food.
Mediterranean Flavors Designed for Sharing
Othello’s menu draws inspiration from a broad culinary region stretching from Southern Spain to the Middle East. This allows the kitchen to explore a rich collection of spices, cooking techniques and ingredients while maintaining a clear and cohesive identity.
Rather than focusing on rigid interpretations of tradition, the restaurant uses its influences as the foundation for food that feels expressive, comforting and contemporary.
The experience often begins with Othello’s house-baked bread, served warm and available with seasonings such as za’atar, harissa or sea salt and olive oil. Inspired by Lebanese man’oushe, the bread immediately communicates the restaurant’s approach: food made with care, grounded in tradition and intended to bring people together.
Shared plates allow diners to create their own journey through the menu. Creamy spreads, vegetables, seafood, meats and freshly baked breads can be combined into a meal that unfolds gradually rather than arriving as a predictable sequence of individual courses.
Othello changes its offerings frequently—sometimes daily—giving the kitchen the freedom to respond to available ingredients and creative inspiration. The restaurant therefore presents its online menus as samples rather than guarantees of exactly what will be served during a particular visit.
That element of change makes each dinner feel distinctive. Returning guests can encounter new dishes while still enjoying the warm hospitality and recognizable flavors at the heart of the restaurant.
A Dining Room With Soul
The atmosphere at Othello complements the food beautifully. The intimate dining room features soft lighting, warm textures and greenery, creating a setting that is elegant without becoming overly formal.
The approximately 60-seat restaurant and patio feel thoughtfully designed, yet there is nothing stiff or overly orchestrated about the experience. The space has the personality of an independent neighborhood restaurant rather than the uniformity of a larger hospitality concept.
That balance makes Othello suitable for many occasions. It can be a destination for an anniversary dinner, an evening with friends or an unhurried midweek meal. Guests may arrive for the food, but the welcoming atmosphere gives them a reason to settle in and stay.
A Natural Addition to Historic Springfield
Othello’s location adds another layer to its appeal. Springfield has become one of Jacksonville’s most compelling neighborhoods, combining historic homes, independent businesses and a strong sense of local identity.
The restaurant feels naturally connected to that environment. It does not attempt to overwhelm the neighborhood with spectacle. Instead, it contributes something thoughtful: a gathering place where residents and visitors can experience globally influenced cuisine within a distinctly Jacksonville setting.
Although Othello has the quality and ambition of a destination restaurant, it retains the intimacy of a place created for its community.
A Jacksonville Restaurant Worth Seeking Out
Othello demonstrates how powerful a restaurant can be when food, family and hospitality are guided by the same vision.
Its Mediterranean-inspired cuisine provides the foundation, but the restaurant’s real strength lies in the complete experience. Warm bread arrives at the table. Shared plates spark conversation. The dining room makes guests feel comfortable. Family history and cultural tradition are expressed with subtlety rather than performance.
For diners seeking one of Jacksonville’s most inviting and distinctive restaurants, Othello is well worth discovering. It offers excellent food in a beautiful setting, but more importantly, it captures the generous spirit of gathering around a table.
Othello is not simply a place to have dinner. It is a celebration of connection, culture and the enduring pleasure of sharing a meal.
